Credit brief 06 / Business preparation

Prepare the business story behind a financing inquiry.

Consistent company information, organized financial records, and a clear use of funds make a financing conversation shorter and more useful. What to have ready before the first read.

Preparation means being able to explain the business, the purpose of the request, and the commitments already in place. It does not guarantee a financing decision.

1. Make the company information consistent.

A commercial credit profile should identify the right business. Experian provides ways to review and update certain business facts associated with a company's file. Start with the legal name, the location, and the reported information rather than assuming the file is complete.

If something is wrong, use the reporting company's business specific process. Consumer and commercial files do not run under identical procedures. Keep a record of the information you submit and of any confirmation you receive.

2. Understand the operating picture.

The SBA describes financial records as the foundation for managing a business. A balance sheet shows assets and obligations. Cash flow information shows how money moves through operations. The 2 answer different questions and are most useful when they agree with the underlying books.

Prepare a plain summary of recurring expenses, existing financing obligations, and any seasonal swing in cash flow. A useful conversation addresses how a new commitment would sit alongside what the company already pays every month.

3. Explain the purpose before evaluating the structure.

The SBA's planning guidance emphasizes explaining the use of requested funds and supporting the business story with financial information. Be specific about the operating need or the planned expenditure. Capital is a means, not the goal.

When evaluating any proposed arrangement, read the complete agreement and ask about costs, payment or collection mechanics, security, and existing obligations. The FTC has highlighted how materially small business financing products differ from 1 another. A merchant cash advance, a term loan, and a line of credit are 3 distinct arrangements and should be evaluated as such.

4. Put it into practice

  1. Write a short statement of the business need and the intended use of funds.
  2. Organize the current financial records and a list of existing obligations for the substantive review.
  3. Use the intake form for the overview only. Sensitive documents move through the agreed process when requested.
