Credit brief 05 / Facts and expectations

Credit improvement: separate the facts from the promises.

The limits of credit repair claims, the difference between an error and an accurate negative entry, and what informed credit management can and cannot do.

Genuine inaccuracies can be challenged. Accurate negative information generally cannot be removed because someone is paid to remove it.

1. An error and an unfavorable fact are different.

The CFPB explains that accurate negative information generally cannot be removed from a consumer credit report on request. Some information can remain for a legally permitted reporting period. The right first question is whether the entry is accurate and complete.

A past due account is not inaccurate because it is inconvenient. Equally, an account that belongs to someone else deserves a factual review. Keeping the 2 situations apart lets you choose a legitimate next step and avoid an expectation no service can responsibly guarantee.

2. Know what outside help can and cannot do.

The FTC states that credit repair companies cannot remove accurate, current negative information, and that consumers can take the lawful steps themselves for little or no cost. Paying a company creates no special right to delete valid history.

Evaluate the actual work on offer. A credible description makes the scope understandable and separates a disputed fact from a desired outcome. At Citadel Ridge, credit advisory is education and credit management for business owners, priced as a fixed fee engagement, and it is kept entirely separate from funding.

3. Be cautious about shortcuts and guarantees.

The FTC warns about schemes that encourage false identity theft claims or promise to erase accurate information. A request to misstate the facts should end the conversation. A new label on a service and a confident pitch change nothing about the need for truthful information.

A sound educational goal is to understand the reports, recognize real errors, and manage the obligations consistently. There is no promised score increase or financing result in that approach. Keep the focus on what you can verify and what the service actually includes.

4. Put it into practice

  1. Ask for a plain English description of the work before paying for any service.
  2. Use the official resources to understand your options and test every promise against them.
  3. Provide truthful information, and refuse any instruction to invent a dispute or an identity theft claim.

Questions about your own profile? Credit advisory is the engagement built around them, and the resource center holds the worksheets, the official guidance, and the reporting company directory.
